IN CHARACTER
Name: Alice Liddell
Canon: Alice in the Country of Hearts(Clover/Diamond/Joker/etc)
Canon Point: Just after the move to Clover
Age: 17

Book Genre: Romance

History:
This canon's time line is fairly murky. Originally an Otome game, a lot of events depend on player choice. In this case, I'm drawing from the manga just to get some consistency. But even that can get a little complex. While Country of Hearts is a pretty linear story, the various versions of the Clover time line all assume that Alice decided not to return to her world and hasn't gotten romantically involved with anyone yet. They also vary on where she chose to live. (This is obviously to allow for manga versions of all the different romantic routes, which is fine. But it does make pinning down her history a little tough.) The Joker stuff is practically based on mind games so it's hard to sort any of it out. That said, there's a fairly good description of the basics here.

In this case, I'm sticking mostly to the events of Hearts, with a dash of Clover. Alice lived in the Clock Tower, chose not to return home, and hasn't become romantically involved yet. The country still shifted to Clover, but nothing significant has happened there yet. Luckily, Alice's personality is the same in every version.

Personality:

While she does have some natural curiosity, this Alice is a far cry from the one in Carroll's book. She is entirely too practical to chase a strange rabbit down a hole and she certainly isn't about to drink things from weird bottles without some 'persuasion.' She's also fairly cynical, and tends to view strange situations, even positive ones, with a degree of suspicion. Because there is always a catch. She speaks very directly and isn't the type to lie to spare someone's feelings. If she's mad at you, you'll be the first to hear about it. She also doesn't spend too much time fretting about things like the science behind suddenly changing time periods or people turning into animals. Very early on she decides that it's easier if she just views such things as dream logic and moves on with her life.

Alice can be pretty bossy too, admonishing Boris and the Bloody Twins for fighting and playing dangerous games. And in all versions of the canon, she's very stubborn about where she chooses to live, often flatly refusing numerous other offers. And she's very insistent on earning her keep too. Alice has a very strong sense of responsibility and hates to think that she might not be pulling her own weight. She bothers Julius constantly to give her chores to do or errands to run. Of course, this same sense of responsibility very likely contributes to her lingering guilt regarding her home world. Even with her memories as muddled as they are, she still feels as though she left something undone and it makes it impossible for her to accept her new home entirely.

While pessimistic enough to refer to herself as 'gloomy,' Alice is especially so regarding romance. Her first love broke her heart when he fell for her sister. A sister that Alice freely acknowledges as prettier, kinder, gentler, smarter, and all around better than her. This did nothing positive for her self esteem. Add this to the fact that Alice has a good sense of her own actual faults, such as her bossy nature or her pessimism, and it's only natural that she would expect any decent guy to be able to find someone better than her. So she tends to look at romance in terms of it's potential for emotional turmoil. Naturally, she is not all that keen to have her heart broken again. And it takes a considerable amount of time for anyone to coax her out of this mentality.

So why is she so popular? She generally just chalks it up to her being an 'outsider,' and thus unique in that world. But more likely it's her kind and caring attitude towards others. She gets attached to people fairly easily and expresses genuine concern when they're upset or hurt. This is an especially unusual trait in a world where lives are considered to be unimportant and replaceable. To Alice, life is precious, and no one is replaceable. Ever. While not necessarily the best idea, she can and will step in to try to stop people from hurting each other. She stands in front a messenger that Peter is holding at gunpoint and refuses to move until he backs down. She's also fairly observant when it comes to the emotional and physical state of others. Even after watching him casually murder a dozen people, Alice is quick to recognize that Ace isn't serious when he threatens her. It's tough to hide injuries from her and she's easily able to tell when someone is depressed or upset about something.

Unique Quality: Pragmatic

Abilities:
She's a hard worker and a good organizer. She can also handle most domestic tasks. But probably her best skill is that she's a fast learner.

Powers: N/A

Inventory: The glass vial that contained the medicine of the heart.

[Alice is sitting in the cafe with a cup of tea, chin in her hand. She looks pensive. Or maybe a little bored.]

Hello, everyone. This is Alice. It's been a few days since we had to plod through some story or another so I've been doing some thinking. Has anyone tried opening a book that doesn't contain any kind of story? For example, a textbook or newspaper? I'm a little curious to know what would happen.

[She lets out a heavy sigh.]

That said, I'm not entirely sure I want to enter a world conjured by a mathematics textbook. But I would still be interested to know if anyone has tried. It seems strange that we would be provided an entire library and expected to ignore all the non-fiction.

[She frowns thoughtfully, and brushes an errant strand of hair behind her ear.]

And speaking of having a few days off from story spelunking, I've been down on level four looking through the archives. I was hoping I might find some helpful information about the library or the mural or.... well, any of this really. There's a lot here though, so I could use a hand. Any volunteers? If you're interested, meet me down in the archives in an hour.
